I like the Acura TL in this category. The only other one on the list that I really like is the ES350, but the styling of the TL is much better, IMO.
The 3-series is probably the most popular of the group, however I feel like just about everyone has a 3-series these days, and for the money you'll pay for a 328, a 5-series is probably financable as well, and you'll get the added cabin space that luxury cars are known for.
I like the CTS-V, but for some reason, the base CTS just doesn't do it for me.
The MKZ doesn't seem like anything special to me and at $30 grand I feel like there were a few things compromised that keep this good vehicle from being a great vehicle.
The C-class offers a 268 hp model for $40 grand which makes me think you're still paying a lot for the MB logo, even at these low levels.
Other cars that I like that would fit into the "near luxury" categor are the Chrysler 300, not that it's a great car, but because the styling is unique, identifyable, and resembles ultraluxury cars like your Rolles' and Bentley's. Also, I think the Audi A6 deserves a spot on this list. It would be my #1 if it were there. Lastly, some runner ups for the list would be the G35 sedan and possibly the Nissan Maxima, though it may be a bit too sporty to be considered a luxury car.
i dont get why people pay more for more cylinders...why dont you pay LESS for LESS cylinders so that you SAVE money in the long run..but anyway id pick the Lincoln....its elegant
Ahh Speedy, ya know I had to choose the CTS simply because that is what I finally decided to buy. After owning mine for a bit over two weeks, I have realized it is easy to fall in love with a vehicle.
I LOVE my BMW 3. Not one complaint out of me - except that I have to replace those dadgum low profile, run flat tires around 10K miles. Oh well, I would not give it up just for that.
FYI, Mercedes is hosting a CDrive promotion in the fall for their all new C-class. Already reserved my spot just so that I can go drive their cars for the fun of it.
Oh, I would not go for an MB anyway. They dropped their warranty program a few notches about 2 years ago and that is what turned me off from considering purchasing the MB. Since BMW has the awesome warranty program I went with it instead.
Where is the Infiniti G35 in this comparison? For me, near luxury vehicle should be RWD or AWD and available with a manual transmission, driving dynamics are important and with a good ride. The ES and MKZ are out of this equation for me.
Those are definitely luxury cars, not "near luxury". They actually should be classified as "entry level luxury".
Of those Id choose the BMW simply because its a drivers car. I like the RWD and the manuals. The Lexus would be next on my list, its about as luxurious as you can get, Ive always been impressed with the E300 and E350, great cars with bulletproof engines/reliability. The new Caddy is vastly improved over last years' model and I like the fact that you can get the CTS-V (if you have the cash), thats a huge bonus. The Lincoln and Mercedes are nice, but I dont like either (get me to a E class and we'll talk). Theyre as much fun as watching grass grow.
The TL is nice, but its FWD, which I dont want if Im gonna plunk down 30-40K. If theyd make it RWD and offer a turbo, Id be all over it.
One question... how come the Infiniti G35 (Sedan or coupe) was left off the list? If that was included, that would be my first choice. The coupe is beautiful, handles and breaks great and makes the most beautiful sounds of the group-- a true luxury/sports coupe.
To be fair, aren't these already considered luxury vehicles? I voted for the Acura, since that would probably be the only vehicle on that list I could drive around here without being dubbed "pretentious" by the working-class neighbors, who resent anyone who makes more money than they do.
My favorite modern near-luxury car is the Mercury Grand Marquis... roomy inside, 6-passenger capacity, large trunk and reliable.
My favorite of the '60s/'70s near-luxury cars are the Oldsmobile 98s, Buick Electras and Chrysler New Yorkers.
