Miata's are great on the road course and auto x if set up right. I used to do track days with the Miata guys. Just not a very practical daily car. NO ROOM for anything
That, to me, is the essence of a sports car. They're not at all practical....they're all about fun and style.
My Subaru is quicker than my MGB or my Miata...and probably out handles them as well in most situations. But....the top doesn't go down. I can haul stuff in it. It holds more people. But....the Miata, and especially the MGB, put a smile on my face when I'm driving the back roads. The Subaru doesn't do that.
You're right about the Miata not having any luggage space! The MGB is absoutely voluminous in comparison! My wife and I will be taking a 4 day trip to the mountains in the Miata in a few weeks. Try packing enough stuff in the Miata trunk for 4 days. I'm a guy....I could probably live out of the trunk for months. Normally my wife could fill that up with makeup and shoes....
The Miata sounds like a good reliable car (dad had one). Im looking for something a little bit larger though. Looking back on it the 350Z does like somewhat heavy and slow. The Corvette would be tight. Im going to be paying my own insurance...so would it cost a lot to insure something like a Corvette? I also like the BMW 330Ci, looks like a killer ride.
Im honored to be serving my country...thanks for thanking me. If that makes any sense. Haha.
My personal tastes for sports cars would run towards the 70's muscle cars. Early 70's Chevelle perhaps.
For something newer I like the 3-Series BMW coupe. You can find something used with decent mileage in your price range. Go test drive one and be sure and test drive several others on your list before making a decision. It's always best to compare vehicles after driving them. That'll help narrow down your selection and then you can start pulling up maintenance history, carfax, user reviews etc.
