Has anybody here taken auto body repair just for the sake of learning? I'd really love to be able to paint my GTA and know I done it myself.

I don't know about your neck of thbe woods, but here in Oregon many community colleges have programs in auto body work. I've taken some in the past.

Let me encourage you to not expect your first car painted to look very polished. There's many steps and shortcuts will stand out.

Good luck.

plus the proper tools and environment to paint a car in. Skill with a gun won't matter if there's dust in the air. So being able to use booths, etc at a school would be good; trying it in your garage at home--not as good

I've taken courses at the local college and believe me, it will be years before you are skilled enough to do a decent paint job on a car, not to mention, lot of hard work.
the basis for a quality paint job is in the preparation. Not something you will learn over night...
If you have nothing to do with your time, and an urge to learn, it's a lot of fun to take the course, but don't expect to paint your car for a very long time...

I know most of the work is in the prep, removing emblems and mouldings, removing plastic bumpers, sanding, removing/filling dents, cleaning, base coat, sanding again, base again, etc, etc.

I'm really picky when it comes to things like door handles being painted over, or something being masked when it should have been removed.
