98-02 camaro's are LS1 they are strong v8 easy to mod and gain power from.if you look hard you could find one for 8000.the 94-97 are lt1 not as strong as the ls1 but still good power wise.

The LS1 is a great engine and I love the fact even the basic Z/28 comes with the T-56 6 speed, but those cars are crap outside the engine and transmissions. I would (and have) pick the Mustang over the F-Body any day. If the OP wants to go faster, there is a huge (and afforable) aftermarket for the Mustangs that will satisfy his needs.

I'd find a late 90's Formula or Trans Am, but that's just me. ; )

Why not test drive them all? I have drove them all and actually owned a '97 Z3...Make sure you're checking out models with the larger motors. I agree with the others, Mustang seems to be the best way to go. I would get a '99+...I like Camaros; too many little things often break down such as the power windows and locks. One other very reliable option in your price range is an 2003-2005 Dodge Neon SRT-4...Yes it's a neon, but about as fast as sub-2005 Mustang and faster than anything other than the camaro

I test drove an SRT-4 when they were new and although quick it was still a cruddy car with an awful interior (although the rest of the cars mentioned here probably arent any better). They were manufacturer rated at 215hp but dyno results show more like 260hp stock on a fairly light car.

Mustang 1997 to 2004
Camaro 1997 to 2002
BMW Z3 1997
Hyundai Tiburon 2001 to 2005

The only car on this list that qualifies as a "sports car" is the BMW Z3.

I don't like any of these but I'd go with the Z3 and the Tiburon as the least awful choices. The Mustang/Camaro might be faster in a straight line but they feel like crap moving and the interior in the Z3/Tiburon is much better. My friend has a Bullitt Mustang (2001) and my girlfriend has a 2002 GT which I hate driving. The interior switches are crap, the steering is numb/noisy and everything looks like a cheap childrens toy.

I know what a sports car is. My current car is a G35 (sports sedan) and the previous car was a 1995 Nissan 300ZX. A rough ride is acceptable (all my vehicles are properly lowered) but the Mustang/Camaro's don't ride like sports cars, they ride like cheap crap. They make noises they shouldn't while the car is moving and I'll nitpick about the cheap shaping of the buttons and the sloppy movement of the interior switches. I'm not asking for a Bentley (or even BMW) quality interior but the "cheap" previous generation Tiburon is better furnished than the Mustang's I've been in.
