Thousands of drivers may be at risk because of cheap, potentially hazardous brake parts, according to a lawsuit filed against two auto parts companies.

Affinia Group Inc. a leading auto parts firm sued two rival companies on Wednesday, claiming they are importing substandard, lightweight replacement brake rotors in order to gain a price advantage at the expense of customer safety.

It'd be interesting to know what parts retailers are selling these rotors.

That said, it goes without saying that it's a good idea to stay away from - for instance - the absolute cheapest brake pads you can buy.

I've got a Chevy truck that I used to use to two a trailer full of mowers & equipment. I can get a set of front brake pads for that truck at Autozone for $13.99. So if the gross weight of the truck, trailer & mowers is about 15,000 lbs, is it really very smart of me to trust a $13.99 set of brake pads to do the job?

Now I don't feel so stupid for paying top $$$ for a complete brake job at the Volvo dealership.

I don't know what you spent, nor do I care. But some of those "top end" services are a rip off.

Typical driving of an automobile does not require slotted rotors and high-performance ceramic pads. Some of that stuff is for commercial or racing applications, and typical consumers can get fooled into thinking they need it.

Slotted rotors are a bad joke on most cars/trucks as it is...........they are no bigger than the OEM pieces.

One better...

Safety Concerns
Many documented vehicle "accidents" have been caused by counterfeit parts, as well. While bogus spark plugs and other engine parts have merely caused aggravating failures and breakdowns, poorly constructed brake and suspension parts have resulted in many deaths.
For example, a number of deaths in Saudi Arabia were attributed to the use of counterfeit brake pads made of compressed wood chips. In Nigeria, brake shoe linings made from compressed grass burst into flames when the brakes were applied. In 1997, seven children died and many others were seriously injured when counterfeit brake pads made of sawdust failed, causing their school bus to overturn. These incidents graphically illustrate the seriousness of the situation when counterfeit parts, made from the cheapest materials, are foisted on an unsuspecting public.

Uh, just regular Volvo parts that are expensive, is what I'm talking about.
