car magazine and Tire Rack combined to test summer performance tires and included in the test was a tire from China. Even though the tread pattern is exactly like a popular summer performance tire, it tested so horrible it didn't even deserve a performance label. Tread pattern is only part of the formula for a good tire. The next part of the formula is the materials and technology that goes into making the rubber for the designed purpose. Performance tires have a softer rubber formula for better grip. Winter/snow tires have a rubber material designed to handle the very cold temperatures. All season tire rubber material has to try to balance between cold and hot temperatures.

I would not trust a tire from China for high performance driving not because its Chinese made but because China has no established tire manufacturers or reputation outside of China.

I've read Chinese tires wear horribly and were likely to seperate. Never buy Chinese tires. Choose well-known brand names.

Tires aren't like lawn chairs....there's all sorts of DOT standards that tires must meet to be sold here. That's not to say they're good tires, but they aren't unsafe.

There are plenty of crappy tires made right here in the USA.

Sure they did.

Then they wouldn't recall all these chinese tires about two years ago.

Very true. Anyone who thinks these tires will seperate on the freeway must think they're buying a Firestone.

According to Tire Rack's website, most sizes of the Kumho Solus K21 are made in China - this is apparently a good tire for what it is - an ordinary all-season tire.

I have a set of H-rated "Merit Metric" tires on the Sube, made in China, they are getting close to worn out but have performed well.

Overall I agree, though, many Chinese manufacturers have little or no QA/QC and more than a few have sold contaminated foods, like the pet food intentionally contaminated with melamine to increase the protien analysis...

True that Firestone has made some damned awful tires, the 'roc came with a set of them, one was pretty bad out of round, they wore out pretty quickly but didn't grip all that well either...

We have all kinds of standards to prevent China from importing toys, etc, with lead in the product. that is sure working well...!
