I love my Subaru Forrester, but its had enough problems I'm not sure I'd get another Subaru. My in-laws all drive Subarus and haven't had the problems I have. Anyway, the a/c went out again today, for the 5th time in 2 years, and I'm done trying to fix it! The Forrester is 7 years old and over 120k miles.

Previous cars:
1982 Nissan Maxima - my first car (10 years old when I got it). It talked! Liked it, reliable.
1993 Geo Storm - Will never buy another Izuzu as long as I live!
1997 Nissan Altima - good, but boring. It served its purpose (first post-college car, bought myself, got me through grad school too). At the time I wanted a Jeep, but went with practical. Never like it.
2002 Subaru Forrester - First car I really picked out b/c I wanted it

Requirements:
No sedans. I love hatchbacks and the like
Mileage much approach or exceed 30mpg
Must have sunroof and heated seats
Manual transmission is good
Nissan Versa is too bitty
Toyota Matrix is too low to the ground
Subaru Outback is too... too.... well my MIL and two SILs have Outbacks. Its too family car for me
We don't and won't have kids. Just the dog, but we are keeping the Forrester around for dog transport and winter driving.
Cube, Scion, etc are just too ugly for me

I've found a 2007 Mini that meets my requirements, but I haven't driven it yet. Also, a 2007 VW Bug Diesel (I could run biodiesel). Again, haven't driven it. The biggest problem I have found is that I have the tastes of a mid-30s, middle class DINK, but want the gas mileage of subcompact and don't want to pay the markup for a hybrid. For example, even if I didn't find the Versa to tiny, its very difficult if not impossible to find the semi-luxury features I want.

Any suggestions as to what else should I check out?

I had it in there to start with, but took it out for fear I'd be laughed at for having champagne tastes and beer budget LOL The two cars I mentioned (2007 VW and MINI) are $20k used and under 30k miles. I like that price range. Definitely under $25k.

And yes, 30mpg hwy. 30 mpg city is too hard to find Right now I don't drive a lot, but am considering a job that would turn me into a supercommuter for a year or so until we can sell the house and move.

I understand where your coming from.

I was looking fro price just to get some kind of frame of mind. I LOVE the Audi A-3, it's a Hatchback that gets 21 City and 30 Highway. It is sporty but has performance and room for the dogs. I looked at the reliability and from the 06 model it seems to be alight, Link. I also saw you where from Maryland so did a quick search on Auto trader so I used Baltimore and a bunch of A-3's popped up for around 20-24K with anywhere from 15-30,000 miles on them. We have 2 dogs and are looking into an A-3 or another Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I 2nd the Mazda 3 recommendation. I have a 2010 3 5door Sport, auto as my run around car. Haven't had it on a highway trip yet but am getting 26 mpg running around my area, driving mostly 30-50mph. (Not much stoplight to stoplight driving). Highway is supposed to be 29 mpg and I expect to beat that with good tire pressure. Suggest you take a look at the Grand Touring hatch model, its got all the bells and whistles you want. The car handles superbly, has excellent performance and the utility of the hatchback is great (we have two dogs who fit comfortably in their large crate in back w/seats down). I've had many sports cars and can attest that handling, braking, etc. are excellent. MPG is not the highest but minor differences from your 30 mpg spec won't add up to much over a year's driving. If you're really going for mpg, check out the Honda Fit, I did. Its a fine little car but way under powered for my taste. The 3 hatch is hard to beat. Another hatch you might want to check out is VW's Rabbit. I really liked it but opted for the 4 door hatch 3 based on driving dynamics and also preferred buying a 2010 as opposed to the '09 WV then available when I bought the 3 this spring.
PS - I didn't mention VW's GTI because I don't like Turbo engines, but it is an option.
