Did you know that the Porsche 911 Turbo does 0-60 mph quicker with an automatic than it does with a manual? (This according to Automobile magazine.)

I've always preferred automatics because you have the best of both worlds... can shift it manually when I want to or let it shift automatically when stuck in traffic or doing a lot of stopping.

3 of the 4 cars I own have either the Mopar Torqueflite or GM Turbo-Hydramatic transmissions... both excellent transmissions which go on and on with little [and usually no] care requried.

I just put a shift kit in the auto transmission of my '66 Plymouth Fury VIP [383]. It can chirp the tires when shifting from 1st and 2nd will stay in 1st or 2nd gear as long as I want it to [unless the speed is below about 12 mph, then it goes from 2nd to 1st automatically which makes it easier on the engine] and is fun to drive yet still has the convenience of an automatic.

An automatic won't smoke the clutch, or stall, or shift into 3rd when it meant to shift into 5th.

I hate manuals. My last 2 cars & my current car are manuals. At first I had to have one, but after a couple years they become a nuisance & I'm just lazy. Why do something yourself when a machine can do it for you?? I actually hate shifting gears so much I'll go from 1st to 3rd to 5th.

Getting an automatic is 1 of 3 reasons I want to trade my car in.

Enjoy manuals while you can.

I would bet that within the next 10 years, they won't even be offered as options anymore, even in Europe.

The best and fastest and most responsive cars in the world no longer use them, and that will trickle down.

For now, I'm going with manual. But I'm really starting to warm up to the dual-clutch automanual units out there. Automatics that pretend to be manuals suck. And a lot of the clutch-based manumatics with a single clutch are clunky and also suck. But the new dual-clutch units merge all of the benefits of an automatic with all of the benefits of a manual. I'd really like to see them completely supplant conventional automatics some day, especially with so many cars currently available only with an automatic. It would be a good way to accommodate both automatic and "shift-it-yourself" users with a single unit.

Since I only drive HEAVY duty 4x4s,I usually get a manual. The autos just won't hold up to the loads I pull.

I prefer manual but they are getting harder and harder to find nowdays. Does anyone know of a smaller sized SUV that comes in manual transmission?

I think the 2008 Jeep Liberty came with a manual 6-speed.

I prefer manual even when driving in traffic. I just worry that they're going to be hard to find in the future, especially if hybrids become more popular, since it seems like none of them offer a manual.
