I found that the GPS I had rented with a car in FL made me take the Loooong way everywhere. It was horrible. I would've been better off with a map. SOmetimes I knew i was already almost at the location and it wanted me to go in the opposite direction.. crazy
I know how to read a map and think that exploring is sometimes fun. I know that maps are "old school" thinking, but do I need to be like the rest of the crowd and purchase a GPS?
Grandpa got along fine without one, dad got along fine without one, and I am getting along fine without one. There are lots of us who don't "go with the flow". I'd spend the money on something else that you really need instead...
I have always been a map person, but I bought a GPS for the times when I travel for work alone. It can sometimes be tough to navigate a new area, map in hand, without a co-pilot to help. My husband resisted it for a long time (even though he was a service electrician and driving to 3 or 4 different jobs in the metro area all day0. Now he loves it and uses it more than I do.
What I have noticed is that you start to lose your sense of where you are and how to get un-lost. I've always been pretty good with directions and can usually get myself back to a main road or town when lost. With the GPS, I lose all sense of where I am in relation to anything else. We like to say you will never know where you are, but you will never get lost.
Rubytue, I think you're on to something when you say "I lose all sense of where I am in relation to anything else" I feel fortunate that I learned to sharpen my sense of direction driving a truck. I'll probably never get any more high-tecch than Mapquest... I truly believe that GPS may indeed take away our sense of direction...sigh.
If you want a gps, get one. If you don't want one, don't get one, but please don't belittle people who are not afraid of technology.
