Above is the best photo of the 1997-2003 Malibu I could find. Center is the speedometer. Left is the tach, first to the right of the speedometer is the fuel and after that is the temperature.

Not my choice for a *what info do I need first* ???

It's a true sports car instrument cluster.

Most sports cars with a manual have the tach front and center.

Exactly! Those old speedos were silly stylistic exercises.

I have always adhere to the 'form follows function' ethic.

I think the speedometers from the 60s and 70s cars and trucks, actually the entire vehicle from these years look far better than the 90s and 2000s vehicles.

Yep, that is apparent from your nom de plume. To each his own. I love old cars too, but the ones I love tend to have dial gauges...

the cars I like are about handling and driving excitement.

Different tastes, but I never got the long wide speedos, difficult to actually see how fast you are going at a glance.

Me, too. That is why the '66 Plymouth speedo is my favorite of the group. The graduations are by the 1 mph, not by the 5 like many cars. Also, it is big and easy to read. I don't like tiny speedometers in which the numbers are crowded together.

I also like the speedos of the early-'60s Chryslers.

My 2nd choice of those I posted is the '69 Cadillac.
