PHOENIX - Speed camera photos of the man in the monkey and giraffe masks have generated lots of chuckles. But the cops aren't laughing.

Dave VonTesmar, 47, started getting the $181.50 tickets last year, but it took Arizona state police several months to realize the same driver was repeatedly triggering speed cameras and refusing to pay the fines.

I mean, couldn't they find him by the license plate?

They have found him via license tags, but he's hiding behind lame excuses like: a) you can't prove that's me driving my own car (becuase of the mask), b) lots of my friends use my car, so it must be them, etc.

He's been on the media all over the place playing the victim and bragging on the loopholes he thinks he sees in the law regarding this deal. I've also read where the authorities have staked out his place and have seen him get in the car and drive it.

If it doesn't do so already, the law should be written to hold the owner of the vehicle responsible for the actions of the "unknown friends" who commit violations in the car (i.e. - same as parking tickets and insurance claims).

Stories like this guy, that refuse to "man up" when they need to, really get my goat.

Serves the state of Arizona right. The simple idea of these speed cameras is an abomination. I would have no reservation in destroying these things if we had them here. It's just another way for a government to rob from its people... the people are justified in fighting back. This guy will get away with this and I am glad for him.

Please remember - a number of other states had the Photo Radar BEFORE Arizona did. So, I would not "blame" AZ for this

The guy will NOT "get away' with this - the media coverage can and will be used, to prosecute him.

OBTW: Others had "no reservations in destroying these things" - and they were caught and prosecuted. One guy even went so far as to fire shots into the back of one of the "radar vans". He now faces life imprisionment - as he killed the man sitting in the van.

Well I never forgot... This took place in AZ, thus it serves AZ right in this particular case. They have to prove he was behind the wheel, whats to misunderstand about that? How do you know those people were caught (except for the obvious murder). Do they have cameras watching cameras? Speed cameras are absurd, I am glad there are people destroying them, maybe the local government will get a clue.

He has ADMITTED TO BEING THE ONE BEHIND THE WHEEL - On camera - a number of times.

AND, what makes it funnier - he is a law enforcement officer.

BECAUSE, the photo radar cameras are a constant video - and the idiots who wanted to destroy them - were VIDEOED, BY THE CAMERA, DOING IT!

There were also witnesses, who helped to catch the individuals.

There is NEVER an excuse for destroying property belonging to another.
