I just totaled my Toyota Celica because it didn't have ABS so I'm looking for a second hand car but I couldn't pick which is the best option.

I need to have rear disc brakes and generally good stopping power and it needs to be a 4-door, and preferably not FWD.

I'm thinking a Toyota 4runner, or a Lexus or a Subaru. what's your ideal everyday car?

What's the budget you're working with?

If you could find a decent used Subaru it should fit the bill. I'd be trying to save $$$. You can always buy a hot car later on when you're making the big bucks. :-)

Why do you need disc brakes in the rear?

$6K isn't going to get you a 4Runner or Lexus unless you like them old and worn.

Most college parking lots are tight and kids drive badly. So I would not want something the size of a 4Runner.

You might be able to find a Mazda Protege in that range. I think some of them have ABS - probably more important than rear discs. Other vehicles to consider - Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra or possibly the oldest of the current generation Sonata.

Used Subarus would be excellent with AWD, but they are relatively expensive used. I think an Outback or Forrester would be great choices.

For $6k, if you bought a Lexus or a 4Runner, you'd have to get something with really high mileage. Plus they aren't particularly cheap to operate or insure, and you say you're a college student.

I dislike FWD cars as well, but I think that is your most practical option. I drive American cars, but I can't recommend them to anyone on a tight budget. You're better off paying a little more up front for a Honda or Toyota, especially if you're buying something with over 50k miles.

yea i'm looking into the Sonatas, I heard 06 and newer comes stanard with ABS, ESC, etc. and they're cheaper and better looking at the same year and mileage than Camrys and Accords.

I think a used Sonata is a very good buy. Because Hyundai doesn't have the status of Honda or Toyota they don't hold their value well. Which is great if you want a used one.

Subaru or Jeep Wrangler.
A Liberty would be good, too, if you can find one within your budget.

Subaru would have the best fuel economy. Manual tranny if you can drive it, and if you can find one. Avoid the 3.0 6 cylinder engine. Difficult to work on, and relatively poor fuel economy.

you might want to check out a ford f150 hemi ram 1500 or chevy silverado 1500 they have all the safety features and in a accident they have the mass and height to keep you safe.
