A car I was thinking about is the Lotus Esprit. It got exposure in the James Bond movies. I always liked that car. They stopped building them in the early '00s. Until the 90s, they had a 4-cylinder turbo engine. Then they started using an 8-cylinder turbo engine.

This is what C/D thought of it at the time. It sounds like a blast to drive, but not daily driver material whatsoever.

I had a friend buy one about 15 years ago, a 1999 SE IIRC. He drove to FL to pick it up, and within 100 miles he had destroyed the drivetrain, rear diff shattered, etc. Put a stop payment on the check, yadda yadda yadda, it was a big mess.

They always looked good, but extremely fragile, impractical cars.

I don't recall what year they went to water-cooling but I think it was in the 90s. I always wondered how much if any character was lost after the transition. I'm guessing the enthusiasts back then preferred the air-cooling.

No excuse for them to be fragile. The factory knows they will be driven enthusiastically.

They had an advertisement ranting about their cars being hand made. I don't recall the advertisement claiming why that was better.

Trivia: There were less than 11,000 made in it's entire production run.

They were aware of the transmission/drivetrain limitations. That twin turbo V8 was good for 500hp with the boost turned up... but they dialed it down because the tranny wouldn't handle the power.

According to my friend (and this is 15 years or so ago) cost to replace the rear diff was $4k. No idea what a whole transmission would go for.

The 993 (93-98) was last of the air-cooled and the 996 (99-2004) as the first of the water-cooled 911
