The little green light that shows my mileage is going out. It has faded gradually until now, when I can't see it at all in the daylight. All of the other lights on the dash are fine. Anybody know how expensive this is to fix? And is it something we can do ourselves or do we need to take it in? Thanks!

(It's on a 02 Buick Century, if that matters.)
That small light bulb is part of the gauge cluster. Typically you can't get to the bulb by reaching behind the dash. So the cluster has to be pulled out. I would guess it would take a minimum of 1/2 hour labor @ $100/hr to change the $2 bulb.
If you are handy - you could do it yourself. But you will need to find a service manual or someone on the internet that has posted how-to instructions.

It is really something that doesn't matter, unless you are selling it. I would not worry about it untill then.
But then how will I know when to change my oil? I always went by every 3000 miles.... It also makes me sad that I can't figure out my mileage each time I fill up. I guess you're right, it really isn't important. And it's definitely not important if it costs 100 bucks!

I was under the assumption that the light was so dim that you could not see it in daylight, but at least at night you could. That is why I made the comment how it is not very important, unless you are trying to sell it. If you can not see it at all, that is a different story. You will have to take it in to the shop for a backlight replacement.
Does your speedometer look like this? Is the numerical odometer readout getting dimmer? If so it's a digital odometer and the module for it is failing. It will have to be removed and repaired as a unit. A good independent shop can handle this. It may take a week or more because the gauge cluster has to be removed and sent to a shop for like this one for repair: Mr. Whizard Technical Services - Instrument Cluster Repair, Speedometer Repair, Odometer Repair and Digital Dash Repair
I assumed this post was about the typical mechanical ODOMETER.
If this is an electronic display - then it is not a bulb problem. The problem may be like what gimme3steps suggests.
