A few months ago I had a brake job done on my 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport. Ever since then, the brakes squeal terribly when the engine is cold. As soon as the engine warms up, the squealing noise ceases. The noise is very disturbing. What could be the cause?

The auto shop that did the brake job is AAA-approved. I've used them many times and they've always done a great job, even advising when I dont need work done or suggesting lesser repairs to save me $$$.

Thanks!

wait..

when you say the engine warms up.

if the jeep sits in the driveway and warms up, as soon as you drive away they don't squeal? or do the brakes actually have to warm up to stop the noise?

also, is the noise from the wheel area or under the hood?

Good questions, JBMallory. As soon as I start the car, I have to apply the brakes because of where I park both at night and in my office parking garage. Now that I think about it, I presume that the brakes have to be warmed up because the squealing stops after I brake 9-10 times -- and car isnt totally warmed up by then. And the noise seems to come from the front wheel area.

did they machine the rotors or just throw a set of pads on?

my advice would be, if it was done very recently to take it back and tell them about it, ask them to put some neverseize on the back of the pads where they touch the caliper and that will probably resolve your issue

Thanks. I paid for new front brakes and I trust that's what was done. I'll ask them to put neverseize on the back of the pads. Thanks again!

Thanks, tex. I'll ask them about the pads, as well. If necessary, I'll pay for replacement pads that are good quality.

also some ceramics squeek cold because of the metal content. if you go back you can ask them to bevel the pads this also helps with some of the squeek

I had new brakes put on and the same thing happened. Went to the dealer and they put anti squeal on and that resolved it for a while, then it started up again. I passed inspection and no problem, the brakes just squeak when its cold. I figured it was cheap brake pads.
