Wow. You are a big fan of paying too much for service then. They don't recommend anything because of local driving conditions. That may be what they tell you - but the only reason they do so is to get you in the service department more often.
As for records - that is an advantage if you don't move. Many brands of vehicles do not keep share service records or store them centrally. Only an individual dealer has the records.
As for value at resale - I think there is no credible advantage to service being done at a dealer vs. at a good independent. The records - or proof of service - is most important.
I'm not exactly a fan of Jiffy Lube - but they won't replace an air filter without asking you. It is up to you to say no.
Dealers right now are the worst at recommending unneeded service like transmission flushes. I do not believe any manufacturer recommends a transmission flush.
Dealers take advantage of the perception that they can be trusted to service your car.
Make comment on tranny flush.iy is needed,my transmission oil looked like coffee grounds at 110,000 .It took another change of fluid at 125,000 to straighten it out. This being automatic.Standard tranny,no.As for perception of dealer,I would not trust them.
We own Volvo's. And I will NOT take them anywhere for service other than my dealer.
We have been with this dealer for quite some time and I have NEVER been disappointed with their service. Yes, I could get the oil changed a little cheaper. But, the Techs know what to look for and have been able to keep little things from becoming big things.
One antidote: The oldest Volvo is a 1999 S80. I took it in for a normal maintenance. My service adviser, who has been with this dealer for over 20 years, came to me and asked me if I had somewhere to be - the tech noticed that certain pressures were not right - particularly the fuel pressure. Turned out the fuel pump, located under the back seat, was leaking. It would take a couple of hours. I asked how much - he said - no charge - "you've earned it". It is a normal charge of over $800.00.

I'll keep going back.
That's a nice story. Any dealer that gives away $800.00 services will not be around much longer. I call BS
If you like - I can send you the service order - showing 0.00
A recall or warranty service ticket will show $0.00. I have no way to tell if it was either of those....I think if the owner of that dealership found out an $800.00 service was given away for free he would have someones Job. $50 $100 maybe, $800 is crazy. If this dealer can afford to give away $800.00 I would be very concerned about what other services I'm paying way to much for.
