I have found the best success using Autotrader. Craigslist has many listings but there are more scams. Craigslist is also irritating because many cars from dealers are listed fresh each day - causing duplicate lists.
Craigslist is a complete mess unless you're looking for a specific make/model and can manipulate its spartan filter accordingly. Plus it's rife with scams. Another vote for autotrader and cars.com

I found my car on craigslist. The scams are so easy to see and avoid. The golden rule is if the ad does not have a phone number, and the seller wants you to Western Union the money to them, and ship it to you, it is a scam.
Carmax.com Pretty good checklists, well attended, and will bring a car from neighboring branches if what you are looking for is not too far away. Good luck!
