It was a great car until the Accountants had the car remade. I heard that the prototype had great suspension and good performance and then all of that got scaled back before production.
The car was a neat idea, but came along during the dark ages of American automotive engineering. GM never really developed it into what it could have been. I've heard the ones from the last year or two they made them are the ones to go for.
Fiero History
According to this site, in the pre-88 Fiero the front suspension was Chevette and the rear suspension was Citation. In 88, the Fiero got the suspension GM engineers originally wanted the car to have but Accountants had removed. The Pontiac 2.5 Iron Duke was used for fuel economy. The above site has photos of the prototype of a potential 1990 Fiero that was axed. Think a smaller two seat 1990s Pontiac Firebird. It would have been great performance unless the accountants got a hold of the plan.
So I've got an opportunity to have one, and was wondering what some of you thought about them. The one I'm looking at is an 87 GT
Is it automatic or manual? If it's a manual, check it out real close because a clutch replacement or replacing the shifter cables can be a pain in the .
Funny comment, but obviously untrue. You know the j a p s copy us, right? The Fiero came out in 1984, and the MR2 came out a year later in 1985. Get your facts straight before posting nonsense.
That's funny. The MR2 wasn't a Fiero copy at all.
Toyota aimed to mimic a much higher level of mid engine car. The best examples of the time were Ferraris. I'm not saying the MR2 was anything like a Ferrari. But there is nothing about the MR2 like the Fiero except the placement of the engine.
I can't remember the last time I saw a Fiero. Probably more than 10 years now.
I thought they were cute when they first came out. A friend got one and it was fun but not real fun as only 2 people could get in it. Won't say how many I've actually seen in one though....
I do see one around my area often. Some guy around here has one that he converted to be electrical. He takes it to car shows some times.
Somebody gave my dad and I a junker Fiero once. We took it because we thought the seats may be cool to use for a streetrod project because of the built in speakers...turned out to be a lame idea actually...not very good speakers at all. But if anyone is interested the brake calipers up front are aluminum and look cool when you polish them up.
I've got an 88 Formula. Have had it over 12 years now, and it is up to 160K miles. I find it a lot of fun to drive. Even with the V6, it's not the fastest car, especially compared to modern cars.
I haven't seen a Fiero in a while. I remember there was one in my area that had a Testarossa kit.
