LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Karen Cordova, a 17-year-old high school student and part-time supermarket cashier, admits she sometimes texts friends while driving home from work late at night, lonely and bored.

The Arizona teenager knows it's illegal in Phoenix and dangerous. She once almost drifted into oncoming traffic while looking at her phone.

It's more than just driving. I was roller skating at an arena and teens were texting while skating. One ran right into me!

Not really a surprise, all that law does is give the police one more thing to charge people with when they cause a wreck.

She probably won't run into a pole, more than likely she will run into another car and kill someone.

I'm waiting for the day someone creates a steering wheel with a text message keyboard that connects to a cellphone via bluetooth type device along with a heads-up display device that mounts to the dashboard. I mentioned this several years ago in a joking manner but the more people text message, the more I think this will come about. I only hope these texters will only kill themselves in a wreck instead of taking the lives of other drivers. What's worse is some of them do this while high or drunk or both. Only time I ever sent a text message was after a hurricane when we couldn't make cell phone calls but could send text messages. Used it to let out-of-state friends know we were ok and to let family know I had electricity so they could get a hot shower, cold drink, and keep some food items in my refrigerator. Other than that, text messaging is a waste of time. Call the person, say what you have to say, then hang up the phone.

But the law written properly can increase the punishment of a texting driver who causes a wreck. Punishments like jail time, large fines, and loss of driver's license for about a year or more ought to help.
