As I understand it, the Cruze is basicly a sedan version of the Astra, which now is similiar in overall shape to the Mazda 3 hatchback. But what's puzzling is GM's choice of engines to bring here. Below is from Fifth Gear, a British car show.
The engines include five petrols and three diesels, starting with two 1.4 petrols of 87bhp and 100bhp, while a turbo version of this engine delivers an impressive 140bhp. There's also a naturally aspirated 115bhp petrol 1.6 and a 180bhp turbo version of that engine. Diesels start with two 1.7s of 110bhp and 125bhp, plus a 160bhp 2.0-litre. Automatic transmission is available on the 1.4 Turbo and 2.0 diesel. FiveFWD - Vauxhall Astra review and road test from Fifth Gear
2011 Chevrolet Cruze - 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show
The base engine is a 1.8-liter inline-4 making 136 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. A slight upgrade will be available in the form of a turbocharged 1.4-liter four that develops 138 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. Both engines will be offered with either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. Chevrolet says the turbocharged model could get as much as 40 mpg on the highway.
The interior photos look nice but the exterior looks Corolla dull and boring. I'm no hatchback fan, but the Astra hatchback version looks much nicer in overall styling than this lump of coal.

Here's some good photos of the Opel Astra. Compare it to the Cruze. Oh, and there's a possibility that GM may rebadge this car as a Buick.

Interesting, Down here the Cruze is set to replace the Astra and Holden is having a 2.0L TurboDiesel as the 2nd engine option.
I don't see a 1.4 87bhp motor being a big seller here compared to cars that come standard with 140 and get the same MPG plus on our massive freeways it would be terrible to try to get it up to speed to merge the only diesel version worth bringing would be 2.0 160HP model because than it could go head to head with the VW golf TDI which also runs a 2.0 diesel anything smaller would just be a waste out here bigger is better and that the way I like it
Tell you what, you keep the Cruze and send us your Ford Falcon.
No deal. The Falcon stays here.
