OK re-reading your original post, I think you did have some antifreeze in the system, just a real weak mixture. But, that's OK, while it will freeze into a slush that won't pump (thus your serpentine belt breaking) it generally won't freeze solid enough to crack the block.
So, probably you dodged the bullet this time.
But, as soon as you can, put some proper antifreeze, preferably mixed 50-50 with distilled water, in there.
If you will buy premium radiator hoses like Gates, and change them every 4 years, you won't have problems with them blowing out while you are driving, usually.
dang, too bad you aren't closer, I have a 1980 AMC Eagle sitting in the pasture, with a 1982 AMC Spirit 4.2L engine in it. It was running good when parked, and you could have it if you were closer.
I would even be willing to load it on the trailer and deliver it for fuel and food, IF you were closer.
Oh, well...
It's here if you want/need it! come and get it.
LOL Montana is a little far, but thanks for the offer! I've actually got the newer 4.0l EFI motor, but if I remember correctly the block/head do line up between both. Supposedly a 4.2 crank in a 4.0 block makes a mean stroker.

That's what I'm hoping, there was at least a little antifreeze in there. I don't know why, but these Cherokee motors love to eat radiator hoses. I've had three of them and had to change the hoses on each one.
Once again, I got raped by work today and couldn't touch my poor Jeep. I repair/replace windshields and this time of year I normally can't get jobs to save my life....but of course, just when I need a little free time I get swamped. It's been close to 40 degrees the last two days and my driveway is bone dry underneath the motor, so hopefully that's a good sign!

4.2 crank in a 4.0 block makes a 4.7 big-bore stroker.

That would be SWEET in my Rubicon, but, sadly, it would take more work than I want to get involved in at my age!
I sure wouldn't want to PAY for that job!
