What is the best GPS available for under $175? Daughters are buying me one for my birthday.

Many thanks for any advice.

I paid a little over 100 bucks for a Magellan Maestro w/ a 4.3 screen about a year ago and use it whenever I leave town.

From what I understand . . . the primary difference with the premium models is more Whistles and Bells. Mine works just fine and does everything I want and/or need.

Good Luck

The Garmin Nuvis seem to be pretty hot items. They are straight forward and easy to navigate.

We have a Tom Tom and like it quite a bit. I think all the GPS's these days are going to be about the same - here's what I'd look for if I bought a new one:

Easy to read screen
Easy to change settings (like turning the volume down)
Free map updates (I have no idea if anyone does this but it irks me to have to pay 1/2 as much for the new maps as a new GPS).

You might want to go to a store and pick them up and look at them and see which one appeals to you the most.

I hate to say this, but Google Maps with Navigation (for smartphones with Android OS) is probably the one that'll be the future.

It's still brand new, so might take 5 months, but some of the features are awesome.

No map update fees or anything like that either, downside ofcourse is you have to buy a new phone, hehe.

I really like my Tom-tom. I don't know how much it would cost, but I think it's worth paying for a bigger screen.
