Just got back from a trip to the East Coast, and again I was struck by how much more pleasant it is driving there. There is an almost total lack of regard for the speed limit, which is great. And people seem much more observant, using the left for passing and moving over when someone wants to pass.
Also, they restricted 18-wheelers out of the left lanes a lot of the time, which was very pleasant.
It's such a contrast to the Dallas area and Texas, where driving is basically open warfare.
I have to say that Boston was the worse city I ever drove in and many of the roadway in the Northeast are terrible to say the least. The best heavy traffic drivers I have witnessed is in claifornia;but i guessthey get alot of practice.
No when there is a accident speed does matter has any expert will tell you. Spped does not allow a driver to cotrol many problems that occur while driving.
Oddly enough, when everyone is driving about the same speed and paying attention to other drives, the speed itself doesn't seem to matter.
Imagine that, it's not speed, it's inattention and aggression.
It's somewhat dependent on the general I.Q. of your fellow motorists.
Whenever i hear people trot out the sorry line about how "speed kills", i immediately think, yes it does. And if you hadn't done so much of it, your brain would be able to comprehend that the argument is flawed!
I don't think a lack of regard for the speed limit is good at all.
I'm all for it as long as 1) the lack of regard is mostly uniform, and 2) it's on limited-access divided highways. That said, I can't say I'm a big fan of driving on the East Coast. The benefits enumerated in the original post are almost completely offset by the sheer volume of traffic, at least in the Bos-Wash corridor.

Yeah, what I do is usually drive the speed limit except when on some freeways where the flow of traffic is faster which then I try to match the flow of traffic.

In heavy urban areas I try to match the speed of traffic, otherwise in more rural areas like where I live, I just go by the speed limit and I've never had a ticket or accident so it works for me.
