no i wouldn't rather be beholden to the middle east for gas. i never said or suggested that

but as long as most of our cars run on gas derived from fossil fuel, even if they ALL got 50mpg, we'd still be beholden to the middle east. we simply can't produce enough of our own oil to meet our needs. even with new drilling

a couple mpg bump in fuel economy isn't going to change that

52b dollars this is going to cost automakers, supposedly. seems to me with that sort of money we should be able to develop viable alternative energy vehicles to take the place of all gas powered cars, not just bump them up a couple mpg. thats not even the beginning of a real solution to our dependence on foreign oil

As always, the unforseen consequences, like the rise of the SUV, driven by CAFE standards that applied to cars but not trucks (SUV replaced the full-size station wagon) and the rise in corn tortilla prices in Mexico driven by the stupid ethanol mandate, will be the biggest effect.

Unfortunately I can't say what the unforseen consequnce will be this time. I could no doubt make a lot of money if I could.
