In my case, I'm talking about blocking out the side windows in the third row of a van. I would still have a clear view through the rear window, the side mirrors, and besides, when I look over my shoulder to pass or merge, I'm generally looking out the middle row windows anyway. Safety is not at risk here, to be clear.

Laws on windows seem ambiguous and vary by state. People can legally drive cargo vans that have no rear window and no side windows in the back, yet in most municipalities, it seems that if you do have windows, they can only be tinted so dark. It seems counter-intuitive that one could legally drive a vehicle with very few windows at all, but one cannot legally tint even a window or two (that would not even exist on a cargo van at all) darker than a certain percentage. But I digress.

While one cannot legally tint windows super dark, can one cover up windows inside the vehicle to the point they don't let light in? I know car curtains do exist, but they seem like a hassle to fit and install and are more common in conversion vans. Hanging clothes from the hooks can help but only does so much.

I was thinking of fitting construction paper or cardboard or some other material right over the inside of the 3rd row windows. The reason is we go on trips in my van, and we tend to alternate while driving so one of us can rest in the roomy far back and avoid all the sun coming at us full force. Covering these windows would make that space even better for that.

The middle and 3rd row windows already have a factory tint (not sure of the percentage), but it will still let in some light on a really sunny day. I'm looking for a cheap, quick fix (that I could remove when I want), not to see if I can get a darker tint. If a cop sees a car with an out of state license plate and clearly blocked out rear windows, will they pull you over? And can they legally ticket you for it in most states?

Yes it's legal. Most vans come with retractable screens and tinted rear windows. Plus when luggage is piled your can't see through them anyway.

I believe most laws speak to covering/tinting the driver's and passengers windows. Most times, covering/tinting any windows further back is legal or there is no language addressing them.

I have painted the back windows on various vehicles I have owned, never had any trouble.
