What the feds should be requiring--and I'm hardly an advocate of more regs--is rupture-resistant racing style fuel cells and fuel lines on passenger vehicles.
OR mandate diesel vehicles. Gas is hyperflammable, diesel not so much.
Burning is a terrible event.
Many 99%-unused features are mandated, costing hundreds of dollars per vehicle.
I think fuel cells would be a good addition to the feds' legacy regarding the auto industry.
Here's another picture that makes you scratch your head and ask, "Why did they choose THAT car to dump all that money into?!?!?!"
you have no idea of how much fun that ride is! (razzing i know, but that is good looking little hot rod)Just look at my profile picture on here. Light, looks ok, and easy to make fast and quick. Now if you want to really ask your question, then you have to wonder why anyone would ever pay for something as ugly as the asian brand vehicles!! If looks wwere the reason for puttin gmoney into a vehicle, the companies like toyota and honda wouldn't be here.

I have always thought it was pure laziness on the feds to not require fuel cells. As for diesel, that is not a safe alternative in an accident. Remember diesel fires from being compressed. That is why spark plugs are not needed in diesel engines. Gas requires a spark or electric static to ignite.
so you mean i couldn't duplicate that scene in that one clint eastwood movie where they shoot him, then they shoot a hole in his gas tank and the truck then catches fire and his orangutan pulls him to safety? Darn....:d
If you have never drove a V8 Vega you haven't lived!!!!My brother and I built one in the mid 80's.A easy swap, the kits offered made it a drop in.The blue one back a few looks good.Had a buy who dropped a 302 in a Pinto with a C4 behind it,and the stock rear end.You would nail it.All it wanted to do was spin in circles while melting the one tire.Always loved a onely peely.Back to OP post.Come on.The 73-87 Chevy truck gas tank deal is long been dead. Most trucks have been repaired or have rusted and or landed in the mouth of a crusher somewhere. Most guys who are messing with them now are moving the fuel tank to the rear.Using Blazer tank or a fuel cell.I'm running a fuel cell on my 86 C10 SWB.The truck had the added tank sheilds installed. Its not the old stuff I would worry about. How about a Smart car gas tank.A rolling death trap.
Probably not....but the movie in question used a 1967-72 GMC truck IIRC....and I don't remember which movie it was either....

Well I've never driven a V8 Vega...but I'm living....in fact I grew up in the 80's and can't recall ever seeing a Vega in person....perhaps they all rusted away by the time I was able to remember anything.
I did own and drove a V8 S-10 once. I don't know if you can relate it to a V8 Vega or not.

Having built many of both, an S10 isn't even a comparision to a good V8'ed Vega/Astre. A good comparision is a V8'ed Pinto to Vega, or a 024 Charger we fixed with a stroked 360 and put a dana 60 under the back. Even had a couple Mustang II's and my fav of those was the notch back with a trunk.

Other than maybe better weight distribution and that you can sit a few friends uncomfortably in the rear, what makes the Vega superior over the S-10?
