I'm usually extremely suspicious of auto mechanics. This shop however, has earned my trust with competitive prices on just about every repair and maintenance work. I've shopped around and done a lot of research to make sure I don't get ripped.

This time, however, they let me down. They have some young kid writing up the tickets often times. I went in for a simple oil change at 8 AM sharp and they did get me in and out quickly.

The tally after 15 minutes? $60!!!! Crazy! Typically, an oil change around here costs about $30 or $40 and you can often find lower. I expressed some surprise at the charge, since I foolishly assumed they would offer me a reasonable price after being a loyal customer for a year and a half. No dice.

The 'ticket guy' said he might be able to offer me a better price later on down the road, but not this time. Not wanting to make a scene, I paid and left.

Do you think I should speak to the manager about this? He's usually really reasonable about the prices he charges, but this new guy he's brought is kind of a dunskie.

Checking the price before the service is done is rudimentary due diligence. If that's their standard price, what's there to talk about?

I pay $50 for an oil filter, Mobile one oil change (4 quarts)--$28 for dino oil. And they top all fluids, wash the windshield vacuum the car, and put air in the tires.

What is shop rate? What do the parts cost? The dollar is getting weaker..
1 month ago a brass round 3" OD by 24 inches was 100 bucks. This month the same thing is 200 bucks... it is what it is.... The dollar is getting to be worthless.

A stinking fender for my 06 Kawi Nomad was an unbelievable 317 last August when I wrecked it. I didn't think that would change much, but now the lowest price i can find is 400 and more to ship.

That dollar again, and for a lousey fender. Every day the dollar gets weaker and weaker and will till this spending spree ends..

Unforunately the COST of Operation is steadly climbing upwards.

Insurance...Liability...Payrolls and don't forget the STATE added costs due to EPA standards. Waste hazard and disposal fees are new charges not known to the avg customer.

Has been a while since I was in business...paid $60 to have a barrell of oil/syphoned/ hauled away. Imagine it is higher today. Besides that I had to pay the State a fee for just having the oil in my possession before removal. Cost upon Cost is the game.

Steve

There is an easy fix for this, DIY. It is simple, much cheaper and you know it is done right.

What kind of car, what oil filter (OEM, OEM grade, parts store grade, or just cheap generic?), and what kind of oil (synthetic, synthetic blend, or regular)?

These days, DIY from the auto parts chain stores with regular stuff is going to cost $15-20 already. Getting a better filter and synthetic, and you can easily spend $40 just for materials.

I am sorry, but it is not the new guy at the shop here who is the "dunskie." Never assume anything, always get a price FIRST no matter how many times you have been to the shop.
