I'm only 24 so I don't have much of a track record. I'll be switching cars this week so I had my first purchased vehicle for 2 1/2 years. I had my dads back up vehicle with me 95% of the time for 3-4 years. So, I've averaging about 3 years now. I'm planning on keeping my new car for a good while though.

25 cars since 1958. For the past 20 years or so I tend to get new ones after the new smell wears off or the excitement goes away.

We don't drive much and buy a new car about once every 20 years. Right now have a 1987 Honda Accord with 56K, and a 1993 Geo Prizm with 83K. Totally agree with the posters who buy used for cash. That's the smartest way to buy a car. My dad always said to pay cash for best used car you can afford, then bank the car payments you would have made until you have enough to buy a new car.

I honestly would not get in the cars a lot of people are touting as "the best way to buy a car". Sorry, but buying a 10, 12, 15 year old car is a ridiculous and stupid thing to do. I hope you don't have kids, because I would consider that child endangerment.

Great way to deal with it! Now, if I could just handle the 'banking the payments part'...

Maybe buying a new Toyota would be the way to go then. Oh wait........

Anyway in regards to people who talk about getting bored with their car, this could be fixed for a lot if you just had a fun weekend car. Maybe get a good reliable used car and a fun classic.

I'm well on my way to catching up and beating your record LV Drunk haha. Were those all daily drivers for you though? Minus a few, mine have all been more on the side of being a classic or just resale.

you're kidding right? a 95-s10 blazer can go VERY safely 300k miles plus with no real issues, that's a 15 year old car, i wouldn't hesitate to put my kids in if i knew the vehicle...

what's ridiculous and stupid is your ignorance about automobiles and safety

My current car is now 8 years old. I bought her new for cash and her name is Sally. I'm looking around for another one with a 6 cyl engine because where we are moving, we will be towing a trailer now and then. We'll still keep this one as the primary vehicle and we'll buy the "new" car with cash and used, about 2-3 years old. She's a great car and I've driven her at speeds of 90 and above and 8-10 hours a day for up to 3 days, then a 2 day break, and repeat the 3 day marathon. It's a 4 cyl 2002 Kia Sportage and I LOVE it. Now has 75K miles on her.

My trusty old Betsy was a 1988 Ford Escort that I bought used for a grand. It was 12 years old when I bought it. It was great, she went everywhere I wanted her to and never left me sitting by the side of the road waiting for a tow. Although she did break down on one long trip upstate and I had to have the motor mounts replaced. I also kept a case of oil and a case of transmission fluid in the back because she drank those liquids like they were going out of style towards the end (engine had blow-by). I actually got 4 years from her and gave her away to someone who needed a vehicle to get back and forth to the nursing home to see his mother. She was still running 2 years later.

In years past, we bought mostly Olds or Chevys, used, for cash. I replaced engines until the car body rusted so bad the front seat struts went through the floor. I had one car I put 3 engines into it and rebuilt the trans once. It was about 3 years old when I bought it and I had it for nearly 15 years. Great big old kingswood wagon.

No, I'm not kidding. Compared to today's vehicles, it's not safe at all. And yes, I think putting kids in something like should qualify as endangerment. It has nothing to do with reliability and everything to do with safety advances.
