My '99 Ford Taurus is acting up - - check engine light is on, speedometer quit all of a sudden, sounds like it wants to cut out on me. Anyone have a clue what might be up? My dad is the mechanic in the family, & he's going on vacation in the morning. Hubby is alright at repairs, but not so great at diagnosing the problem. Would love to hear any ideas!

Go to autozone and tell them your check engine light is on and they will do the rest.

I would get it to a shop they will run a diagnostic and find whats up with it.
pretty much what wheelsup said but if you are not mechanically inclined take it to a independant shop and get them to look at it and fix it.

The moral of this is this, do not try to diagnose electrical/computer problems yourself! You need that diagnostic equipment or you will spend a fortune on parts you do not need. As stated before, take it somewhere to be hooked up!

Your check engine light comes on when a fault code is tripped and logged by the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) computer. A hand-held OBDII (system used in all cars from 1996 to now) scanner will retrieve the code that caused the light to come on.

However, I'm going to bet that it's a faulty speed sensor but don't take my word for it. Get the codes read so you don't go replacing parts that don't need replacing.

Good advice,,,,The more a person knows about their car the better, even if they arent going to do the repair.some mechanics look for the ones who know nothing because they can run the bill up and not be questioned.

That's what my dad said it sounded like. My husband drove it this morning, & said nothing seemed wrong, however! I'm going to wait till tomorrow to take it to Autozone ( never knew they did that for free!!) , as he's at work & don't want to get stuck w/ 3 kids on the highway!

Pretty sure a faulty speed sensor won't set a CEL. CELs are generally engine and emissions related.

You may have lost the speed sensor but it may be a coincidence.
