I'm thinking about getting a new car. I was wondering since the title to my car was issued by New Mexico but I live in Virginia w/a VA tag, is there something I need to do paperwork wise before selling the car to an individual or dealership here in VA?
FWIW, I had a car in CO that had IL title with CO plates. CO DMV said they did not care where car was titled, all CO did was register it in their state for residency( & fee ) purposes. Later sold it to private party that took it to FL !
However, this kind of issue can vary greatly from state to state, so I would suggest you call VA DMV and ask them. If you trade car with dealer, they might not have problem, but a private party might be leery about such a deal.
More for FWIW, I just moved to CT. In researching their requirements, all they says is "new plates in 90 days", "new D/L in 60 days", nothing about titles.
I traded in my car last week for a 2012 Maxima SV with sport & tech package. Virginia dealer had no problems with the New Mexico title.
