Modern appliances/electronics/cars are more difficult to work on because they are generally significantly more complex than those of the past. Just because vacuum tubes are simple to swap doesn't mean I would want one in my TV today.
When I bought a new car this year, I first went around to the US dealerships, and I quickly discovered that I am not the demographic they are making cars for (which is stupid, frankly, because I can pay for pretty much whatever I want in cash).
What really turned me off was the amount of shiny bling inside the cars (chrome trim) and the chrome 18" and 20" wheels and all the chrome crud on the nose of the car. As far as I'm concerned, bling went out with Mr. T and deserves to stay out.

I will only own American vehicles myself. Some kid isn't going to blame Rugged for his dad or mom losing their job. I also work on them myself and want parts that are easily available at any auto parts store. My sister has a Honda and that damn thing is a freaking joke. You have dealer only this and dealer only that. F that!LOL.. My BIL is shamed at my presence and says after this one is gone there will be no more!LOL.... Back in the late 70's to probably the mid 80's it made sense to buy foreign vehicles because of the junk coming out of Detroit. Guess what though? That was over 25 years ago and Americans need to get over it!
Here's my take. Overall reliability: Honda. Body reliability: Honda, Toyota, Ford are all a tie. Engine reliability: Honda. Trans reliability: GM. In ten years: Hyundai and Ford will take over as most reliable. American cars from 1975 - 2005 were pretty much junk. Anyone own an '80s Cavalier? You know what I mean.
Probably the biggest factor in what you buy is if you still do the majority of the work yourself? If so, the clear cut choice is still American. This is not only for parts and availability but for how the thing is designed as well. Many of the foreign stuff I work on a drunk monkey engineer must have designed the damned thing. It is pure BS and why I won't own one!

i don't see much to like from Chrysler, really. and i am not an ageist or w/e, but when i see the 80 year old CEO of GM whom can barely walk doing GM commercials and talking about cars, i just feel like the "old boys network" still runs the american auto industry. bean counters first, car guys second. or at least it became that way
bob lutz. saw that guy on Letterman one day putting down alternative fuel cars, hybrids, and all the rest. said GM "just gives people what they want"
according to him atm its big, ungainly, thirsty SUV's. because its always like that when gas is "cheap." gas is $3.00 a gallon :/
he also took great pride in being "the spiritual father" of the Dodge Viper, and complained he had to sacrifice one of his personally owned fighter jets because of the rescission. so even HE had to cut back

something about this kind of thinking from the top down....this is why American cars are not as competitive
i would most likely not buy a GM car or Chrysler for myself in the mainstream sedan or suv segment. a Ford, sure. but not a Lincoln
I would love to own a Ferrari or a Lamborghini but it isn't in the tin bangers budget!
Well, I can tell you that a Corolla is certainly way easier to work on than an Escort.
