i just got a 1991 toyota pickup(4cyl) 4x4. it has a misfire so i jus changed the spark plugs and plug wires. its still misfiring but idk why because if i take the plug wire off on the spark plug end i can see it spark so im pretty sure its not the distributor which i thought might be it. i can also feel it kick in to four cylinders sometimes when im drivin. Does anyone know what the problem could be? your help is appreciated

You bought it this way?, I would have a mechanic look it over
Your plug wires might be in the wrong order. Could be a fuel filter to a carb issue.

Could be one of the plug seals leaking.

Is this injected? If so it may have a bad injector spray pattern.

If not then it might be carbon tracking inside the cap, or some other flaw related to the cap and rotor. Carbon tracks inside the cap or on the rotor look like jagged pencil lines. You need to look hard to them.

maybe check it in the dark. your cables may be bad that cause the current to jump somewhere else. personally i 'feel' my cables every now and then

You have not given enough information to diagnose. IIRC this engine has mechanically adjusted valves, the "motorcycle style" shim adjustments tend to stay constant or nearly constant for a lot of miles, particularly on Toys - but they do tend to tighten up over big mileage.

If it has a distributor driven directly off the cam, horizontal, like the 3S-FE engine in my 87 Camry, these can develop an oil leak into the distributor cap.

*Probably* this truck has at least some "deferred maintenance" issues - it's *likely* that a thorough tuneup per the shop manual (get one if you don't have one, even a Chilton or Haynes is probably OK for the tuneup, although from this vintage the Toyota official factory manuals are the best) will clear up the misfire.

Keep in mind it might be a failing head gasket or burnt valve, I have seen both on Toys.
