Which cars have had the best track record for lowest costs to operate? I am looking at cars in the $15,000 price range. Must get good gas mileage and have a standard transmission.

I am going to need a little more info are you looking for new or used?
do you need a large car, mid-size or sub compact?
besides a standard tranny what other options do you want or need?.
if you want a new car with a $15,000 "out the door" price you could get a Hyundai Elantra "Blue." these cars come standard with a manual trans and base at $14,145.
if you want air conditioning, a stereo, usb / iopd jack, and cruise control, thats is packaged at $1700 more. this raises its price close to a GLS model, in which case you can take a look at one of those. equipped like the Blue standard, the GLS would be very similar
but the point is, Hyundai makes deals. imo you could def get a Blue model with the comfort package for around $15,000 "out the door," and even a GLS. especially with the standard transmission. 2010 is the last model year for these cars, so incentives, rebates, and dealer discounts can be found. it could make a purchase a no haggle, painless process
only thing i would suggest is getting some new tires right off the bat. the OEM tires are made for "low rolling resistance" (for fuel economy) and are too firm and too noisy. quieter tires made for ride comfort improves the ride quality and noise level in the car significantly. i got mine for just over $300, couldn't be happier
its inexpensive to own, has a long warranty, is reliable, and roomy inside. if buying brand new (as opposed to preowned) its worth a look. oh, word has it that its not good in snow, however. not at all
how come i see a lot of owner reviews that say "not good in the snow" for this car?
don't these people know about snow tires? they live where it snows, after all!
i on the other hand, do not
LOL I live in vancouver and we get a little snow in winter but you see guys driving around with Z-rated low profile summer only tires with their nice rims sliding all over the place.
