Hello,

I currently live in Michigan and I'm driving to California to permanently live there. The problem is that I'm leaving on June 1st, which is the same day that my Michigan plate expire. Should I drive across the country with expired plates, renew them in Michigan, or what?

Thanks!

Renew the plates. It's less expensive than the fines, and impound if you're caught.

Thanks a lot. If I renew in Michigan will I have to get a California plate when I move out there?

You will, but you would have 30 days to do so -- much easier than dealing with an expired registration.

ETA: 30 days when you establish permanent residency, is the requirement, not from the MI renewal.

I wouldn't bother renewing the plates - you're leaving. Once you get outside Michigan, no cop is going to write you a ticket for expired tags, and yes, you are in a 30 day window.

Do you have to turn the old plates in? If so, you should do that before you leave and see about getting a 30 day tag since you are leaving the state. See what the DMV says about your case.

Thanks a lot. I'll get a 30 day Michigan plate renewal and then get a Cali plate when I move out there.

Most states give you either a 5 day or 10 day "grace period" on your tabs.

You bring up a good point. My sticker says June, so does it expire June 1st or the last day of June?

If you are moving June 1, you have nothing to worry about. Just mail the plate back to MI after you get to Cali and get your new plates.
