Vehicle overheating after turning off but temperature gauge shows norma (air conditioning, best)

2004 Jeep Liberty Sport:

I am having an issue with overheating although my temperature gauge shows as it normally does. It did this once and the radiator cap, relay switch, and temperature sensor was changed. I rode it several times with no problems. Then today it happened again. Thing is that you do not see any steam (even sitting still) and as I said, the gauge shows normal until I turn it off. Then the steam is horrible.
Tonight the fan was crossed over to check. As long as the air conditioning was on the fan would run, turn it off and the fan went off.

Most dash gauges are pretty much idiot lights designed to stay in the center of range unless there is a serious issue.

The steam could signify a leak, vs overheating. Normally what I would do in this case is hook up my OBD2 scanner and read the exact temp that the engine coolant temp sensor is reading to determine if the car is overheating, or if there is a leak somewhere in the system.

You say steam comes out....from where exactly? It's entirely possible you have a leak somewhere.

There are many possibilities, and probably best to take it in to a reputable shop. In my experience, the Chrysler-Jeep dealers will most likely try to rip you off. Just to name a few, bad thermostat or radiator cap, leaking head gasket, bad fan heat sensor, bad water pump, leaking radiator hose or radiator.
