From Acura, the TL isn't worth looking at unless its a 2004 and up model, which are actually pretty nice cars. Not quite as sporty as the G35 and you're stuck with wrong wheel drive but still good on power. I'd personally ignore the Corolla/Civic altogether because they are in a whole different segment and just aren't appealing to me but you can weight your own personal feelings with everything else that I've said.
Thanks. Its for the wife

I drive a 2011 VW CC.

For her we were actually just going to get a used car, shes fine with anything that isn't too much of guzzler and doesn't need to be in the shop all the time.

Are 2004 Acura TLs and the G35s as "nice", sturdy, and reliable as German cars (well BMW 3 series, as that's the only car we can potentially afford)?

Reason I'm considering used luxury is because I think they're safer, more comfortable in the interior, and also they're just sturdier--none of that shaking or noise on the beltway.

Performance is not that big of an issue. I'd say our main consideration is reliability and comfort at 100K.

Cheers,
