If you count the military. I'm retired from the Navy, as an AC. Trained a lot of guys, that later went with the FAA. Probably should have done so myself, but was always leery of the labor/management issues, that seem to be perpetual with the FAA.
Have a PPL/instrument, but haven't logged any time in years. The plan was to become an airline pilot. The first Arab Oil Embargo in 1973, made the training cost prohibitive. Went in the Navy and stayed for 22 years.
After retiring from the Navy, I worked a few years as a dispatcher with TWA, before AA took them over.
I'm still passionate about aviation. But Microsoft FS, is about as close as I get anymore.
Not ATC, but I used to do ramp control from the towers at KATL. Having to juggle a dozen callsigns, locations, departure vectors, and gate assignments in your head at once for $10 just wasn't worth it.
I'm airport ops now, the idiot in the suburban that the local controller gets to clear on for runway inspections and such. Also used to be on an ARFF crew.
I want to be an ATC but my interest started after I was 30 which is the maximum age that FAA will take new trainees. Now I learn as much as I can on my own and listen to Listen to Live ATC (Air Traffic Control) Communications | LiveATC.net. I'm studying for the GROL licence test and figure that the next best thing would to become an Airway Facilities Specialist(FAA) or an avionics tech.
I studied ATC in college, was actually a semster away from taking the ATSAT and going to the academy (assuming I passed of course). Not sure why I was interested, it's one of the few things that has kept my interest and I've become quite knowledgable of the profession. After I get out of the military I intend to finish that schooling and pursue ATC as a career.
