Former Mesaba (Northwest Airlink) Avro RJ-85. This was a 1600 nm flight with a full payload. Some of the guys on the real aviation forums, that are typed in the RJ-85, are saying that it doesn't have the range.

Early on, it looks like he was put in a holding pattern, and simply ran out of gas.

Lower tier airlines in South America are generally to be avoided. Poor operational control, antiquated ATC, and more often than not, unforgiving terrain.

And yeah, I know, American hit a mountain down there with a 757 in 1995. Still, if I had to travel to South America, I would prefer to do it with a North American based major airline.

Whilst a horrible tragedy, at least a few did survive this unfortunate disaster. Most of the plane crashes in the last 5 years have been completely unforgiving with no survivors.

The pilot requested a different flight path and was denied.

Would this be a case of gross negligence on behalf of the pilot(s), the airline, and/or the ATC's?

Or was this a matter of equipment failure?

Regardless, it's a tragic loss of innocent life.
