27 March 1977, most deadly accident in aviation history, 583 souls lost.

So many "what if this had not happened".

What if there hadn't been a bomb scare causing many plans to divert to Tenerife.

What if the weather hadn't turned bad (fog).

What if the "missing" passengers hadn't decided to go walk about causing the flight to be delayed while there were found.

What if the Pan Am hadn't taken on all that petrol.

And so it goes...

Captain Robert Lee Bragg, who was then first officer on the Pan Am 747 and survived the crash, passed away 9 February 2017

Wow, you made me read that Wiki article as I had forgotten the details of that tragedy. I do remember that accident because of the sheer number of lives lost, plus the fact that it was in the Canary Islands. Yes, there are so many "what-ifs"....including the woman who decided not to re-board the KLM flight, making her the sole survivor. The article did answer my next question, which was going to be whether English is used as a common language.
