Hello,

Let me start by saying that I've read many post on here, but still unable to find help to certain questions I have. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My wife and I are moving to Baltimore next year, and we have never lived on the east coast before. We are from Seattle, WA.

I am contracted to work at Sinai Hospital (and Levindale Senior Homes) for three years and I am looking for info on which areas that are SAFE and is within a 30min car commute from Sinai Hospital. We are open to renting apartments and also to buying a house if we won't loose money for selling it in three years. We are willing to spend as much as $800-1000/month for a one BR apt or up to 250K for a decent house.

I've searched the neighborhoods around Sinai and the NW suburbs, including Pikesville. Still it would be better to get input for those who've had experiences living there.

Also, my wife is a pediatric RN. Any suggestions on which Children's Hospital we should look at?

How safe is the area surrounding Sinai Hospital?

You could also email me at nvo240@yahoo.com

Thanks a bunch!!!

Default My 2cents

I used to own a condo in Coldspring Newtown, which is within a safe, 7-minute walk from Sinai. Go and visit. A stable, multiracial community of unusual hillside houses designed by the Israeli architect Moshe Safdie. In- season tennis courts and swimming pool, Waldorf school. The whole neighborhood of 200+ units is connected through safe and well-lit walkways. We loved it there, but eventually outgrew the smallish 1,300 sq.ft. unit.
I now live in Cheswolde, which is a 7-minute car ride (now two sevens, maybe I should play this number) across Northern Parkway. We have a rancher on a half-acre lot in the city and perfectly happy. Several affordable rental choices as well.
If you want to branch out, most of Baltimore's most desirable neighborhoods are within 30 minutes of Sinai.

Not really. There's an enterprise on Reistertown road, but that's probably a 20-30 minute walk at least.

Just across from Mount Sinai is Mount Washington which is a very nice neighborhood. Just west is Upper Park Heights with a substantial Jewish population. East of Sinai is Hampden and Roland Park which are also area's to consider.

Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital (subacute/long term care for infants and children) is practically next door to Sinai, and Sinai itself has a childrens hopsital. Hopkins has and University of Maryland have one each in the city. Not sure about Mercy or GBMC.

If I were going to live around Sinai, I'd try to get a job at some place nearby (Mt. Washington Pediatric, Sinai, GBMC), because a commute out of the city will take half an hour on an ideal day, longer on most days. You could take the metro to Hopkins instead of driving, but it'll probably still be an hour. Same if you hypothetically take the light rail to University of Maryland Medical Center.

You forgot to mention if you have kids or not, this would be crucial in your apartment search.
City schools are bad...

Secondly, there is a pediatric hospital at Sinai - your wife may start her search there )))

I was also going to suggest Coldspring Newtown, it's an interestingly designed neighborhood. My sister lived there for years and had a great townhouse in a friendly community with plenty of amenities.

Otherwise I'd look at Mt. Washington or Hampden if you are okay with living in city limits. If not, Pikesville might work too.

Just don't do anything to the immediate west or south. Pretty much all your choices in the other directions are golden. Lots to choose from in the area, it really is just a matter of the lifestyle you guys prefer.
