... in late October for a marching band event at Towson U. I plan to drive straight up I-95 on Friday morning and return on Sunday. (I've made the trip from SAV to DC in under 8 hours before; Mapquest says Townson is about 10 hours ... is that right?)

Is there anything I should know? Best way to get there / bypass the DC area, places to stay, eat, sleep, avoid, etc? I know it's on the north side of Baltimore but haven't been up that way in years and know nothing of the area.

Also, what's the weather likely to be like the weekend of Oct. 23?

Thanks

I think the only real way for you to avoid Washington would be to take highway 17 up the coast and then 301 through southern MD - but I bet this would double your driving time!

The stretch of your trip between say, Woodbridge VA and Towson, should be avoided at rush hours (approx 7 am-10am, 4 p.m.-7 p.m.). If I were making this drive, I'd plan to hit Northern Va at about 6:30 or 7 and avoid all the traffic and get settled into my hotel in Towson at about 8:30 or so.

I can't predict the weather but fall is usually kind of dry. Towson has plenty of places to eat and sleep but I don't go there too much for either so I'll let another poster recommend those.

I made that drive in one day once ... not fun. Drive safely!

What he/she said, although even at 6:30 you may not be avoiding all the traffic.

If you've made it to DC in under 8 hours, depending on traffic you can get to Towson in another hour and 15 minutes/hour and a half. Of course mapquest estimates are based on driving the speed limit...
