First, crime occurs everywhere. However, the Inner Harbor and Little Italy are safe areas to go. Baltimore is basically safe as long as you keep your wits about you. Don't wander around at night, pay attention to your surroundings, and if someone says something to you, ignore it. It's a great place to bring a family since it has the waterfront, aquarium, great places to eat (Little Italy, Greektown, etc. not the chain places) and the people are all generally very friendly.

Pretty closed-minded thinking. What you have are too many stupid people who happen to have firearms in their posessions illegally. Law-abiding citizens rarely cause issues with firearms.

Having said that, Maryland doesn't issue carry permits, so you're in a world of hurt if you're found with one (supposedly). There are actually people out there (retired LEO from other states) who came to MD and couldn't get a carry permit, while school teachers who only watched a 2 hour video were issued one (teachers are one of the groups that aren't immediately denied - yes, they are still prohibited from school grounds). Also heard of a woman who had multiple written threats that were documented to MSP, that her boyfriend was going to kill her, and they denied it (again, proper training, etc). Guess what... he did it. Would it have changed the outcome? Who knows, but at least there would have been a fighting chance.

Do yourself a big favor and go to dinner at Da'Mimmos - best place in Little Italy. Awesome 20oz veal chop.

This is what happens when nut jobs like O'Malley and Cardin are our leaders. They will also allow illegal aliens to overrun our state like they've done to Texas and Florida.

Statistically, for violent crime, Little Italy and the Harbor area are very, very safe - by the numbers and population density - safer than walking down the street in many isolated suburbs.

However, the rate of petty crime, cars being rifled, hustlers trying to con you out of "gas money", and other nuisance crimes, the stats are pretty bad.

Like the man said - use good judgement. Don't carry large amounts of cash, don't do drugs, and walk away from bad situations. The streets are safe downtown, even after dark. Don't bring a gun. You'll get mandatory jail time just for carrying it. The "stats" on positive gun ownership are weighted (very) heavily in favor of burglary and home entry cases. Any idiot who thinks it's a good idea to pull a gun out on a city street in a residential area and start popping off shots, with his wife and kids standing there and people in the houses all around, rather than just handing over the $50 in his wallet needs his head examined.
