As I understand it, if your previous license was renewed after visiting an MVA office, the next renewal may be accomplished online or via snail mail. Upon receipt of the new license which incidentally is good for eight years, you destroy the previous one.

For those who don't have passports, how are you handling requests for showing photo IDs. Every MD office requires it and even more importantly, so does my favorite liquor store, even if it's obvious that the individual is older than dirt. No exceptions.

There may be age requiements for vision testing etc, check with
Maryland Drivers License Renewal Guide | DMV.org

You can also get a state ID card, a non drivers license ID issued by the MVA

Oh yeah, I need to submit results of my ophthalmologist's exam with every new renewal.

So you recommend requesting an ID card along with the license. The mail-in application provides for this, but of course, it'll necessitate a visit after all to MVA for the mug shot. Or else I could use the old driver's license with the mug shot for ID purposes, notwithstanding MVA's order to destroy it.

Fyi, you cannot be issued a state id and drivers license during the same visit. In fact, if you present a state id as a form of id when applying for a drivers license, then mva will take your state id. At least that's how it worked three years ago.

Not understanding the photo ID problem. When you renew your MD driver's license by mail, the new one arrives with the same picture on it that your old license had. So, you still have a valid photo ID. No need for a passport and no need to keep the old license.

Yeah, you're right. I misread it the first time around.

I didn't realize they used the old photo (from 5 yrs. ago in my case). That'll be more "accurate" than using the old ID badges (1960s-1990s) that they required at work.

Thanks.

Got the renewal application yesterday. It offered a 6-year license. MVA sent my late wife an application last month, offering an 8-year license.

MVA .... who can figure?
