Tax breaks to developers are done in many cities (and suburban counties) in attempts to increase the tax base - many feel that is often not worth it, but its hardly unique to baltimore. as for layoffs, does baltimore have a much larger municipal labor force than other cities with similar populations, physical layouts, and demographics?

Baltimore just sucks all around. Just blow this piece of **** city up and start from scratch. Only a few neighborhoods would remain: fells point, harbor east, Canton, Mount Vernon, federal hill, Mount Washington....etc. After a while it becomes pointless to defend a city that doesn't give a Damn about itself. This is coming from someone born and raised in Baltimore city.

It often seems like we do, but I don't know for sure.

My husband has a background in public policy/urban planning. He said one of the big problems with Baltimore was that too many of the people who work in Baltimore actually live in the county, so that the city does not get the benefit of their property taxes and that they also spend the bulk of their salaries in the county. Meanwhile, the city has to provide police, fire, trash etc to those workers while they are in the city (among other things). Too may of the gainfully employed flew the coop.

It was one of the reasons he was so adamant that we live within the city limits.

Baltimore is safe, but police officers are rarely in the evenings on the streets ..

Lighten up...it was a joke! I think the misery and despair in Baltimore puts everyone on edge. Try to relax and think of it as just a bad dream.
