I got a job in Baltimore and am looking for a place in the city or nearby. I have family just a relatively short Amtrak ride away, so I'd like to visit them frequently on the weekends or have them visit me.

Which Amtrak station (Penn or BWI) is safest during non-commuting hours? I'd probably leave on a Friday evening train and return on a Sunday evening train. If I return at 11pm on a Sunday evening, will I fear for my life walking back to my car in the garage? (I'm assuming I'll drive to the station, unless there's a neighborhood that's safe to live in and walk to and from the station at nights.)

I've never seen anyone shady in the Penn garage, even in off hours. Mt. Vernon, just south of Penn Station is an awesome place to live. If you can afford it the brand new Fitzgerald apartment building is very nice.

The Penn Station garage is fine. When returning to Baltimore, more often than not, there will be others also going to the lot. I have never had an issue with it and use it quite frequently at off-hours.

Both are safe.. The Garage @ Penn may be more pricier. Cheaper garages are available within walking distance and the area is generally safe in the vicinity of each those same garages with UB students, travelers and the like.
