How are the hotels around the Convention Center? Safe? Okay to walk around at night?

I may be there the first weekend of March.

Thanks!

Or I may stay near the airport and take a cab to the convention center.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

The hotels and area around the convention center are fine. There will be a lot of people strolling around. After 10 or so, take a cab if venturing far.

The new Hilton, while ugly, is connected to the convention center by walkway and quite nice inside, I'm sure.

But God is it heinous!

The Hilton is nice (I'm told... haven't stayed there myself) and is right there. The Hyatt is very nice as well. Marriott Waterfront is very nice, the Marriott Camden Yards is okay but not quite as nice. Renaissance is alright. Holiday Inn is passable. Any others you were wondering about, I stayed at a lot of them before I moved here....

You can walk between the convention center and the inner harbor area (and surrounding neighborhoods like Fells, Harbor East, Little Italy, and Federal Hill) during the day and evening with no problems. There will be a lot of other people out. Late at night (like after 10pm'ish) a cab would be a good idea.

I wouldn't stay at the airport unless you are doing it to save money (and then you'd need to take the light rail in because a cab will be like $25 each way).
