If you are okay with a townhouse, ellicott city or columbia would be the first places I'd look. Getting a single family home there for 300k will be a bit hard.

HandsUPThumbsDown - it sounds like you are familiar with Elkridge area. Can you provide more information on the area? Is it more rural, small town feeling, or crowded? Things to do, types of people, more conservative or liberal? Etc. My husband may be transferring to that area and I might have a job in Bowie and we are looking for the best area to live that is either in one of these towns or somewhere in-between.

Thanks, Angela

I actually don't know much about the Elkridge area but from what I've seen I like it. I used to spend a lot of time at the Patapsco State Park there which is why I visited. There is the usual surburban sprawl but parts of it do feel a little bit like a small town. I can't speak to its policital leanings.

Geodon,

I would suggest areas such as Columbia, Arundel Mills, Jessup, Laurel, Greenspring. I live in the DC metro area, but I have lived in Baltimore most of my life. My Dear mom worked at the University of MD for 30 years and retired. You can find homes in your price range in those areas which I've mentioned. If you need help, let me know.

Elkridge (Howard County) is very reasonable SFH around $300 - $350K and the schools are better than Balto County.

Ellicott City, Elkridge, and Columbia if you have kids all are 30 or less drive. You pay for the Howard County

Option open's up considerably if you are willing to consider Cantonsville, pikesville, owning mills, Arbutcus, and Halethrop but don't go past Washington . these are also child friendly areas.

Owning Mills and Catonsville all have made the top 50 of money magazines and Forbes best places to live.

Columbia, and Ellicott city made it to number 2..but that comes with a pricetag.
