I am moving to Baltimore to attend the Hopkins School of Public Health on the main medical (JHH) campus. I am considering a place about 4 blocks (the 300 block of Drew Street) east of Hopkins-Bayview campus that backs up against Joseph E. Lee Park. Its at the back of the neighborhood. I've been told that quiet a bit of Medical residents and live in this neighborhood and its safe to walk around during the day, park you car, and has low crime (car broken into, etc) relative to other parts of the city. Any thoughts? Is this true?

It's not the most salubrious part of Baltimore. Not particularly pretty.

I'm sure it will be fine for your purpose, but most Hopkins students and medical residents tend to live either by the waterfront in Canton or slightly inland around Patterson Park, or up by the Homewood campus in North Baltimore, or in Mount Vernon/Bolton Hill in the city center.

Or even commute from Towson and Howard County (especially if they have families with children).

Default Go for it

It may not have much snob appeal but it will be fine for your stated purpose.

jalee6 -- If you ended up in the Bayview area, there's a good Shoppers supermarket nearby. In Greektown, several good eateries: Acropolis, Ikaros and Samos (cash only). There is a terrific restaurant on Holabird Avenue, Jimmy's. Great seafood, beef. I guess this tells you about what kind of a guy I am: I would go to Jimmy's (at a fraction of cost) over Ruth's Chris.

I currently work at Bayview and park my car on Eastern. Haven't had any problems, of course I don't leave any valuables in my car. Ironically though folks who park their cars on campus, where security patrols, have had their cars smashed in for the GPS, Iphones etc devices.

Anyway the neighborhood is ok going through some changes with the influx of Hispanics. These folks are about work and family so I wouldn't expect anything more than nuisance crimes (ie loud music and drunkeness on weekends).
