Hi

I'm a Swedish guy flying over to the states on June 6, Arriving at JFK airport and then driving to Baltimore. The plan is to stay in Baltimore for a few days and drive back to NYC.
Are there any good stops on the way from NYC to Baltimore that you could recommend?
What would you recommend that I should NOT miss while in Baltimore?

Thanks!
Johan

First... get WEST of New York as soon as possible.
(you could easily spend a wonderful month in NYC... but that' a different thread)
West... because that gets you away from the I-95 corridor and into Pennsylvania.

Find a road map, then take the whole day to meander your way through south east PA
until you stumble onto I-83 around Harrisburg or York. From there head south to Baltimore.
(an extra 75 road miles)

As for Baltimore... It is an actual City with a thousand different things to see and do.
Some clue about what your interests are would help a lot to recommend anything.

Theater? Museums? Athletics? Restaurants? Architecture?

I'd give Philadelphia at least a day if not two. We just visited there for the first time since moving to the Baltimore area, and if I were just looking to be a tourist I'd give Philadelphia at least equal time to Baltimore.

In Baltimore I recommend the AVAM for something unique: American Visionary Art Museum

This link should be a good start. As a previous poster already mentioned, it would help if you mentioned what you would be interested in seeing.

You could go to New Hope, PA and spend a few lovely hours, Bethleham, PA is cute, drive west of Philly on the back roads and see the Amish Country, then take I-83 to Baltimore. In Baltimore, go to Fells Point, Canton, Greektown ( for food), Hamden, Federal Hill and Mt. Vernon neighborhoods. All beautiful historic areas. Ellicot City is a charming town just a few miles southwest of baltimore.

Atlantic City, NJ- trashy beach casino town
Philadelphia, Pa- get a good cheese steak, check out some US history
Dewey beach, DE- partying, laid back one mile stretch of beach
Aberdeen, MD- check out the Ripken Baseball complex, pretty neat

Plenty of Ikeas on the way, check out the US eating up Sweedish Furniture.

This is a trip I have been making my whole life as my families are split between these two places. As a child, we stopped only for restrooms and food. As an adult, I find myself doing the exact same thing. Not much interesting along 295 or the jersey turnpike. However we have been known to stop at the Charcoal Pit in Wilmington: Charcoal Pit Restaurants - Home of the Original 1/4 Pound Hamburger

Very exciting, I know.

Elk Neck State Park would be a nice detour off 95 too, maybe take a swim: Maryland Department of Natural Resources - Maryland Park Service

Seeing Amish Country would certainly be a unique experience.

However, there's no way I would see New Hope & Bethlehem(!), but skip Philadelphia.

Then dont bother with Bethleham. New Hope is a unique place and its kinda on the way to Philly if you dont mind taking the long route. The main towns in the Amish Country are Intercourse, Bird in Hand, Blue Balls and Paradise, but to really see the amish country, get a map and take some of the back country roads. Arriving into Baltimore from the north (I-83) is the most beautiful way to get into the city, so from the AMish country it is an easy drive to York to get on the highway. In Philly, there is a neighborhood I like thats out of the way, called Manyunk (not sure I spelled it right). If you choose not to go to Amish country, you could aslo stop and visit New Castle, Delaware, which is quite lovely and historic. Have a fun trip.
