Can anyone recommend some nice areas a good 10 or 20 miles away from here and the city line for which to live in? Preferably not too high costs ($700-$900).

Been living in Essex for 20 years and can no longer put up with the increase in crime. I've been mugged at gun point by a gang already and even had a family members car stolen right in front of the house before. Another family member was shot 4 times trying to escape a robbery/abduction not to long ago and almost died. I want to get away from all this before something much worse happens.

Also what are some good sites that list housing developments for surrounding areas and sites that give helpful reviews of developments?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Would you consider where you live to be a bad side of Essex? You know there are good sides and bad sides to every area.

Unfortunately, the cost to rent has risen so much the past few years that you're limited if your budget is $700.- $900.

Finally a reply!

I suppose I could get a roommate and up the budget to $1200-$1400. Ignoring the budget what are the safest regions in general in Maryland?

LOL

move to HoCo, especially West Friendship neighborhood if you don't care about budget. Better yet, move to PA or western MD

Crime is practically everywhere now. But if you want to stay in Baltimore County there are some nice areas of Parkville, Hamilton, Overlea, and Fullerton that you could probably find a small apt in your budget range.

Good Luck.

Update question:

What are some good non-bogus review sites for rental apartments and townhouse developments?

Usually the best reviews come from the neighbors. Did you decide on an area for rentals? Moderator cut: No soliciting business on the forum, please.

how about Harford County, not so far from Essex but considerably less crime (with the exception of parts of Edgewood). Consider Perry Hall, Fallston, Bel Air, Abingdon -- all are within 20 miles of Baltimore and considerably cheaper than Howard County.
